Candidate: Tanya Gulliver

Who are you?

My name is Tanya Gulliver and I am a community activist - primarily in the areas of homelessnes, poverty, sex workers and queer issues. I have been involved in monitoring of City Hall through various community groups and understand the issues facing Council. I teach a course on homelessness at Ryerson and always teach my students that it is up to each of us to create the change we want to see in the world - this is my chance to do so.

Why are you running?

I've followed local politics and the budget process at City Hall for years, and quite frankly, I think I can do better! I want to help connect communities and people back to their city; right now the whole municipal process can be very daunting. I have past experience in local politics as a school board trustee and want to be on the front line of creating positive change for Toronto.

What should a City Councillor be?

A city councillor should understand their community - not just their local neighbourhood or ward but the entire city. They should be ready to work, listen, respond and open to new ideas. A councillor will face competing interests from constituents, staff, other councillors and special interest groups and they need to be able to weigh each issue and make an informed decision.

Anything else?

Having lived and worked in several cities across Southern Ontario I see both strengths and weaknesses within Toronto. Councillors need to find ways to work together to minimize the latter and build on the former.
