Candidate: Charlene Sutherland

Who are you?

I am a problem solver. I'm currently an administrative assistant at a seniors community centre, but I ultimately want to work with people and solve bigger social problems to improve people's lives. I'm saddened by all the injustice in the world, even here at home, and I want to do something about those things. Before I was in the public sector, I worked in the private sector in technical support, so I also have a very logical mind.

Why are you running?

Why am I running: I'll be honest. I'm running for City Idol because I don't think I have the typical educational or professional background in dealing with social issues that someone would have who would run for City Council and win. My Bachelor degree is in Math, not political science or social work. This competition will give me a chance to show how I think and the kind of positive changes I can make without having to have the qualifications that would be necessary to apply for the same kind of job. I have the intelligence and passion for a job like this, but I haven't yet been given a chance to do it.

What should a City Councillor be?

What should a councillor be: A city councillor should be a liaison between the citizens and the senior government, and ultimately, to the higher levels of government. S/he should be an effective citizen of his or her ward and of the city to address problems at both a local level and at a big picture level for the whole city.

We need new leaders.
